SEOUL,SouthKorea--(BUSINESSWIRE)--#12GB_LPDDR5--SamsungElectronicsCo.,Ltd.,theworldleaderinadvancedmemorytechnology,todayannouncedthatithasbegunmassproducingtheindustry’sfirst12-gigabit(Gb)LPDDR5mobileDRAM,whichhasbeenoptimizedforenabling5GandAIfeaturesinfuturesmartphones.Thenewmobilememorycomesjustfivemonthsafterannouncingmassproductionofthe12GBLPDDR4X,furtherreinforcingthecompany’spremiummemorylineup.Samsungalsoplanstostartmassproducing12-gigabyte(GB)LPDDR5packageslaterthismonth,eachcombiningeightofthe12Gbchips,inlinewithgrowingdemandforhighersmartphoneperformanceandcapacityfrompremiumsmartphonemanufacturers.

Thankstoitsindustry-leadingspeedandpowerefficiency,Samsung’snewmobileDRAMcanenablenext-generationflagshipsmartphonestofullyleverage5GandAIcapabilitieslikeultra-high-definitionvideorecordingandmachinelearning,whilegreatlyextendingthebatterylife.

Atadatarateof5,500megabitspersecond(Mb/s),the12GbLPDDR5isapproximately1.3timesfasterthanpreviousmobilememory(LPDDR4X,4266Mb/s)thatisfoundintoday’shigh-endsmartphones.Whenmadeintoa12GBpackage,theLPDDR5isabletotransfer44GBofdata,orabout12full-HD(3.7GB-sized)movies,inonlyasecond.Thenewchipalsousesupto30percentlesspowerthanitspredecessorbyintegratinganewcircuitdesignwithenhancedclocking,trainingandlow-powerfeaturethatensuresstableperformanceevenwhenoperatingatablazinglyfastspeed.

Inordertomanageproductioncapacitywithmoreflexibility,Samsungisconsideringtransferringits12GbLPDDR5productiontoitsPyeongtaek(Korea)campusstartingnextyear,dependingondemandfromglobalcustomers.Followingitsintroductionofthe12GbLPDDR5mobileDRAM,Samsungexpectstoalsodevelopa16GbLPDDR5nextyear,tosolidifyitscompetitiveedgeintheglobalmemorymarket.
