Godzilla: 3 rivals the titan should face in future installments

With a movie out soon and another Godzilla chapter to come, here are three rivals the titan should face.

With the success of the 2014 Godzilla film, the iconic Japanese franchise was ready to be fully revived for western audiences, sparking the sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters and the already announced Godzilla vs Kong to follow in 2020. With more Godzilla on the way, there are a few faces that could potentially battle the titan we know and love.

In the upcoming Godzilla film, we’re certain that we’ll be receiving at least three familiar foes with King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan each partaking in a battle royale of monsters, but when our champion inevitably conquers his rivals, who should the reptilian titan face off against next? We have a few ideas worth considering.

3. Mechagodzilla

Sure, Mechagodzilla hasn’t always been the most realistic of foes, but in a world where towering monsters clash in epic fashion, there’s a some wiggle room for storytelling. In the past, Mechagodzilla was humanity’s response to the terrifying power of Godzilla, pitting machine against nature with each incarnation creating massive ramifications for the world.

I’m aware we have seen that Godzilla is now widely adored by the public for his paternal feelings towards humanity, we don’t want to see any regression with the reputation he’s fought for, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t other avenues that could be explored. In order to maintain originality, details could stray from previous films by having a group in opposition of the government secretly developing the robotic titan to face off against Godzilla instead of a military led assassination attempt.

Even if the public approval of Godzilla manages to change over the course of the next two films, it’ll leave a door open for Mechagodzilla to appear via the traditional route and regardless, the dynamic could be fascinating.

2. Destoroyah

Of all of Godzilla foes, one that is particularly threatening is the demonic-like mutation known as Destoroyah. The creature was created after Tokyo’s military used a chemical weapon labeled the Oxygen Destroyer to kill Godzilla, but ultimately led to the mutation of Precambrian crustaceans as one massive kaiju in the deepest craters of Tokyo Bay.

Though Godzilla is a sea-based entity himself, Destoroyah’s Micro-Oxygen Beam, DNA absorption, flight and energy draining techniques make it one of the most powerful characters in the Godzilla universe to date. Obviously we’d still be rooting for Godzilla, but the notion of an insane power clash between the two would be something the casual moviegoers would appreciate as much as the hardcore franchise fans.

1. Space Godzilla

Godzilla has faced a multitude of opponents in the franchise’s history, but one of the most intelligent would be the cosmic force of Space Godzilla. Whereas Godzilla is known to be a creation of nature, Space Godzilla is rooted in the complete destruction of life. When it originally appeared, the extraterrestrial foe was meticulous in strategizing against Godzilla as well as humanity by tapping into man-made energy and the life-force of other monsters. Unlike other kaiju from the films, Space Godzilla set out to conquer Earth and others just participated in destruction of the planet while fighting one another for sport.

Space Godzilla’s array of abilities also give it an advantageous range for attack, while still emulating the traditional appearance of Godzilla. It does feature plenty of aesthetically unique additions as well, such as crystals embedded in its skin that act as a power reserve to fuel the destructive energy the creature weaponizes.

Of all of Godzilla’s past and present opponents why wouldn’t we want to see him go head-to-head with one that is, genetically speaking, his biggest rival?

Are there any Godzilla characters from the Toho universe that you would like to see return in future installments? Let us know your thoughts!
