Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez supports resolution that could lead to Trump’s impeachment

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) was among the first lawmakers to say President Donald Trump should be investigated and possibly impeached following the release of special counsel Robert Mueller’s highly anticipated report on Thursday, BuzzFeed News reports.

“Mueller’s report is clear in pointing to Congress’ responsibility in investigating obstruction of justice by the President,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter. “It is our job as outlined in Article 1, Sec 2, Clause 5 of the US Constitution. As such, I’ll be signing onto @RashidaTlaib’s impeachment resolution.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) is also now supporting the impeachment resolution.

“Impeachment is part of our constitutional responsibility,” Omar tweeted. “We have an obligation to investigate whether the President committed impeachable offenses.”

In March, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) introduced the resolution, which only calls for an investigation into whether Trump should be impeached.

Congresswoman Rashida TlaibEverything outlined in the #MuellerReport is further proof of what I’ve been saying for a long time: it’s #TimetoImpeach. The first step? The House Judiciary Committee launching an investigation into whether Trump committed impeachable offenses.

Since the release of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report, only a few lawmakers have called for Trump’s impeachment, including Rep. Al Green (D-Texas). But Green has always been in favor of impeachment.

“The president knows he shouldn’t be in office. He knows what he has done. We know what he has done. It is #TimeToImpeach,” Green tweeted on Thursday.

Congressman Al GreenPer the #MuellerReport, the President indicated “This is the end of my presidency” when he received word that an independent counsel had been appointed. The President knows he shouldn’t be in office. He knows what he has done. We know what he has done. It is #TimeToImpeach.

Mueller’s redacted report was released Thursday morning. Mueller ultimately came to the conclusion that he could not conclude whether Trump committed a crime, but he did “not exonerate” Trump on obstruction of justice.

Many interpreted this to mean that Mueller left the decision up to Congress, as he cannot indict a sitting president.
