Rio Ferdinand names the two Manchester United players Louis van Gaal should have kept

Rio Ferdinand has hit out at former Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal for allowing Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck to depart Old Trafford.

Cleverley and Welbeck were both key members of Sir Alex Ferguson's Premier League winning squad in 2012-13 - the legendary manager's final season at the club.

But after neither the midfielder or striker impressed during David Moyes' dismal single year in the Red Devils' hotseat, van Gaal got rid.

Welbeck was allowed to join rivals Arsenal in a £16million deal after just two appearances under the Dutchman.

While England international Cleverley managed a single outing for van Gaal before he was loaned out to Aston Villa, and sold to Everton a year later.

But former United defender Ferdinand reckons allowing the two academy aces to depart was a bad move from van Gaal - who last a season.
