No one likes writing a dating profile.

It's impossibly hard to promote yourself without coming across as either over-confident or a total mess. So why not turn the task over to artificial intelligence?

Because it's horrible at it, that's why.

US company GetCenturyLink decided to use its neural network to generate a set of profiles. It fed in 500 existing Tinder profiles and asked the computer to produce 50 new ones.

The 500 profiles were manually harvested from across the five most populous cities in the US. The company then used a set of algorithms to produce the new bios.

The results are, as you might expect, absolute nonsense.

The most coherent of them was Jessica's: "I look great with makeup. Me naps, no travel. Cheese sandwiches wanna kiss ‘em. I love going reading, movies, pants, seriously. Baby probably your next ex gf."

Sarah's bio, on the other hand, would send potential suitors running to the hills. No matter how desperate you are to find love you certainly shouldn't start your bio with "every breath is agony, son" and finish it with "maybe neurotic".

Sandwiches seemed to be a theme, with both Jessica and Sarah's profile making mention of them.

The men didn't come off much better. The profile for Chris suggests he's an "institute ready vegetarian" and claims that he's a guitarist, boxer, chef, barber and attorney.

While Matt claims to be "huge" and his closing gambit is "swiped right, it's because we'd make attractive babies". Which, to be fair, might actually be a decent selling point for a Tinder bio.

While the results in this experiment are horrific, it's perfectly possible that a well-written AI could produce much better results. Especially if it was fed data about one person, rather than 500 Internet randoms.

And Tinder is a big believer in the technology in general.

Last year, Tinder founder Sean Rad said "I think a lot about how we can use AI to transform dating. Five years from now instead of scrolling, searching, swiping, I think these devices will be intelligent enough to just give you the answer.”
